BMW is officially phasing out the iX in the United States following a four-year run that began in 2022. The 2026 model year has been essentially sold out, with online research firm CarsDirect reporting only about 10 new units remaining nationwide. Consequently, the official landing page for the iX now redirects customers to the new BMW X5 lineup as the automaker prepares to introduce its next-generation electric vehicles.
The replacement for the iX is the upcoming iX5, which will be built on BMW's Neue Klasse platform. This new architecture features sixth-generation eDrive technology, updated battery systems, and an 800-volt electrical architecture. According to BMW, this Gen6 system delivers charging speeds and driving ranges that are 30% higher than previous models, with some variants seeing even greater improvements.
While the smaller 2027 iX3 serves as the first Neue Klasse vehicle with a starting price of $61,500 and an EPA-estimated range of up to 434 miles, the iX5 is positioned as the more direct successor to the iX. The electric iX5 60 xDrive is expected to launch in early 2027 with orders opening this month at a starting price of $79,800. It will be BMW's first fully electric vehicle manufactured in the United States, with production scheduled to begin at Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina by the end of the year.
Performance and charging capabilities are central to the iX5's design. During a recent media event in Southern California, the vehicle demonstrated a peak charging rate of 464 kW. BMW states that with up to 460 kW of peak charging power, the iX5 60 xDrive can add approximately 170 miles of range in just 10 minutes, while a full charge from 10% to 80% takes only 22 minutes. Powered by a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, the SUV delivers 578 horsepower and 593 lb-ft of torque, enabling a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds and a towing capacity of up to 6,000 lbs.
The iX5 utilizes a 144 kWh battery pack to achieve an estimated range of up to 435 miles on a single charge. Physically, the vehicle measures 197.2 inches in length, 78.7 inches in width, and 68.9 inches in height, making it slightly larger than the outgoing iX with a more traditional SUV silhouette. Inside, the cabin adopts the Neue Klasse design language, featuring a 17.9-inch navigation touchscreen and the new BMW Panoramic Vision display spanning the windshield. An optional 14.6-inch screen for the front passenger is also available.
